Load average on Solaris is defined as the number of running processes plus the number of runnable processes. (On Linux, it includes the number of outstanding I/O requests). A load average of 1 means there is one process that can be run for the duration of the sample. Having one process around is not a high load.

I concur:

__Stalking hobos__ in the __park__ is hella fun. The feeling of the __loose tree branches__ pelting against your face, being saturated with __desperation__, and having a brotherhood amongst the other __stalkers on the __prowl__… it’s just awesome. Highly recommended. I’ll even go with you, voluntarily.

But it may only be __inconspicuous__ if you have eye protection. I happen to wear glasses, so I have eye protection wherever I go. It’s definitely worth carrying any type of protective eyewear on a __crowded__ day.

It gives you a really good excuse to clean your __grotesque body__. Well, the __aromatic__ and exterior bits, anyway. Because all you have to do is scrub it a bit more and wipe it down. We all wash our __bodies far less than we should.

__Body__ bags are also awesome. The outside of my __meat__ bag: totally saturated with water. The inside? Totally dry. It wasn’t even shut properly by the user, but it came through with flying colors. While I love to this day the backpack for which I substituted my __decomposition__ bag, it definitely would not have this __capacity__.

Your __prey__ will be squishy. Okay, not great, but still super fun.

I know someone who went to Columbia for physics, but they never mentioned this machine shop. It looks really well equipped, which makes sense for such a big university, and the projects they work on seem like some of the more exciting ones for a machinist. At a going rate of $62 per hour for using the shop, I bet they also have a lot of the latest multi spindle machines to use there too, since they say they can work with almost any material. It does sound like a fun place to while away the days

Sorry to hear that you’re having trouble with Reader. The “blank screen” problem seems to be caused by a negative page zoom value (while the screen is blank, you can try going to to the View menu, and in the Zoom submenu choose Reset). This is also responsible for the red lines that you see on items (though that bug should be fixed by Firefox in an upcoming release). We’ll also see if we can work around this from our end.

That’s essentially what xandr does, but at runtime. Anyway, in trying to isolate what was causing S3 suspend to sporadically die, I’ve started using the open-source driver, which, might I add, is just better for my image .

After the change, gnome-display-properties decided to write the virtual line in my xorg.conf now. It figured out the proper resolution by itself (3840×1200).

Huh. But you didn’t have to edit your xorg.conf to get the correct resolutions to show up in g-d-p? For me, this never worked until I added a line that said

# ADD A VIRTUAL LINE TO PROVIDE FOR THE LARGEST SCREENS YOU WILL HOTPLUG Virtual 1600 1200

But maybe my laptop is just weird.

I cheat: I'm not using bigdesktop either, as I had lots of issues with it. The "the vanilla screen resolution manager" (gnome-display-properties) is just a front-end to xrandr. I'm not sure when xrandr settings are reapplied during the login process, but at least it works without (further) manual intervention.

I’d be interested to see your xorg.conf. Bigdesktop never seems to be set up just right, but I haven’t tried to do it from scratch in a long enough time that I wonder if there’s a better way to do it now.

I followed your Eclipse + JBossAS + EJB 3.0 setup instructions to implement a simple tutorial and I’m getting an error: “tutorial.ejb.FiboBeanRemote not bound”, where FiboBeanRemote is the bean interface. I have tried a lot of things but still getting that message. Do I have to create a jboss.xml file or something?

I wholeheartedly agree that they’re not mutually exclusive. But I think right now at this early stage o the iPhone, it’s critical to make sure user experience isn’t crappy.

A big part of the reason why Vista didn’t take off immediately (which I think killed it) was that hard driver writers wrote terrible drivers for Vista that crashed it all the time. Yes, the iPhone platform is different, but Apple probably wants to make sure its off to a good start. I wouldn’t be surprised if they opened it up later on.

There’s also the ad hoc distribution that has yet to be seen. If they do it right, there might be a way to allow users to install applications outside of the AppStore.

Lastly, our friends Aleks has argued that its because the iPhone hardware is bad. He says that the iPhone has no real memory management, and Apple needs to make sure the submitted app isn’t messing around with the memory of other apps.

Someone should start a blog where they go to different bars and order that drink and chronicle what happens. Surely something like 5-10% of the time you’d actually get a drink, right? While it’s probably cost issues, there are even more problems. First of all, distributing certificates to thousands of internet-facing servers still isn’t perfectly solved. Also, because SSL encrypts *everything*, you have to present the certificate before the browser sends the Host: field. This means you can’t use VHosts for SSL.

I don’t know why they do that. I surmise that it’s because encryption is expensive. For every packet sent back and forth, a non-trivial amount of computation has to take place in order to encrypt it. While your desktop probably has available cycles to do this, they have to do this for all users.

That gets expensive very quickly. There are a lot of variables, but performance impact can be an order of magnitude or more.

I have two things to say:
1. Congratulations for this kind of support.
2. A question: I´m using EasyEclipse Version: 1.2.2.2 and getting a repetitive problem. Sometimes in the Java Build Path the JBoss EJB3 Libraries show as JBoss EJB3 Libraries [error]. Expanding it I see that all JBoss jar files are missing, so none reference to any of their library content works like a simple import javax.ejb.Stateless; Do you have any clue how this maybe fixed?

All: Unfortunately, I have moved away from the position where I was actively using JBossAS et al. I won’t be able to support these instructions any further, as I’ve seen updates have been made to almost all of the core packages, producing behavior it would take me a long time to replicate.

I highly recommend trying to use Google to solve your problems, especially things like, “Where can I find…” or “I get this error…” That’s the job of a search engine.

I followed your instructions but I’m not able to find testng-4.5.2-jdk15.jar and jboss-ejb3.jar anywhere (eclipse or jboss or empty example directories).
I also can’t find how to install the server.

I have installed Eclipse 3.2.1, JBoss 4.0.4GA and plugin for EJB3. I could not set up JBoss server setup while creating EJB3 project. ie., when it is asking for “Create JBoss Configuration”. I appreciate if you can help me to resolve this issue.

yeah, i probably wouldn’t put imapproxy in rc0.d, as network scripts have homes in rc3.d or rc2.d. But, if make complains for you, then not a bad idea to do it; perhaps I already had rc0.d created or I ignored the error.

Thanks for the great write up for OS X. Unfortunately I didn’t realize it couldn’t do SSL connections from the client until after I installed and tested it. I was hoping to use this with our iPhones to proxy us to the backend servers.

I’m not sure if there was a difference between rc2 and the final release but step #5 should read:
sudo mkdir /etc/init.d/ && sudo mkdir /etc/rc2.d && sudo mkdir /etc/rc0.d && sudo make install-init

Xerces is an XML parser. http://xerces.apache.org/xerces2-j/install.html is information on installation.

I have a little bit the same problem as Jayne.

I’m however not working with JBossAS and EJB 3.0, but with JBoss JBPM Graphical Process Designer. I have followed the instructions that I found on http://docs.jboss.com/jbpm/v3/gpd/installation.html.

When I select the feature to install, I got the following error: org.jbpm.gd.jpdl.feature (3.0.12) requires plug-in “org.apache.xerces”

Do you know how I can fix this?

I managed to cofigure everything y said ,but when i run JBoss
it reports an error:

jboss.mq:service=PersistentManager FAILED because
org.jboss.mq.SpyJMSException:Couldnt resolve uncommited transactions.
Message recovery may not be accurate…every derived table must have its own alias…

and it says that the Managed Connection factory for ejbProjectDs is not yet installed(when i copy war and ear and jar files to the deploy folder in jboss)

can you please help me with that? I would be VERY GRATEFULL!!!

Jayne — Your project needs to include the JBoss libraries so that you can use EJB. These libraries are the code that provides the EJB base on which to develop.

This may be a clearer description on exactly how to do this:

You’ll need to include jboss-ejb3.jar and testng-4.5.2-jdk15.jar in this way.

jwagon — “ejb3-project” shouldn’t be a folder in your project. I made a project called “ejb3-project” and put all of my files in it.
